How to play Schnapsen

Goal: Win deals to collect game points — first to 7 game points wins. 20-card deck (A, 10, K, Q, J of each suit), five cards each; the turned-up card sets "trump". Card values: Ace 11, Ten 10, King 4, Queen 3, Jack 2.

Tricks: the leader plays a card and the other plays one back. A trump beats any non-trump; otherwise the higher card of the LED suit wins (order: A, 10, K, Q, J). The winner keeps both cards' points and leads next. While the deck is open you can play anything, and you both draw after each trick (winner first).

Marriage: on your lead, show the King and Queen of one suit and lead one of them — 20 points, or 40 in trumps. A marriage declared before you've won a trick counts once you win your first.

Trump Jack: on your lead, while the deck is open, you can swap the trump Jack for the face-up trump card.

Closing: on your lead you can close the deck — no more drawing, and from then on (just like when the deck runs out) you must follow suit and beat the card if you can, or trump it if you can't follow.

Winning a deal: first to 66 points takes it, worth 1 game point if your opponent has 33 or more, 2 if they have less, or 3 if they won no tricks at all. If nobody reaches 66, the last trick wins the deal. Close the deck and fall short of 66, and your opponent gets 2 game points (3 if you'd won no tricks).
