How to play Durak

Goal: Don't be the last player stuck holding cards — that player is the "durak" (the fool) and loses. 36-card deck (6 up to Ace); the bottom card is turned up and its suit is "trump", which beats any card of the other three suits.

Who starts: whoever holds the lowest trump attacks first.

Attack & defend: the attacker plays a card. The defender must beat it with a HIGHER card of the same suit, or any trump (a higher trump to beat a trump). Once it's beaten, the attacker may add another card — but only one whose rank is already on the table — up to six attacks, and never more than the defender can answer.

End of the bout: if the defender beats everything, those cards are thrown away and the defender attacks next. If they can't (or won't) beat a card, they pick up everything on the table and the same attacker goes again.

Refill: after each bout you both draw back up to six cards (attacker first) while the deck lasts.

Winning: once the deck's gone, get rid of all your cards. Whoever's left holding cards is the durak; if you both run out together, it's a draw.
